Expanding Child Care Access for Essential Workforce During the Covid-19 Emergency

Governor Whitmer announced an Executive Order last night to expand capacity for tuition-based child care services for health care workers, first responders and other members of the essential workforce. To all essential workers in Michigan, we say thank you for your service during this crisis.

The Governor has defined essential workers as health care workers, direct care workers, emergency medical service providers, first responders, law enforcement personnel, sanitation workers, child care workers, corrections personnel, postal workers, public health employees, court personnel, critical infrastructure providers including: utilities, manufacturing, mass transit, grocers, suppliers, and key government employees including: child protective service workers, child welfare, foster care, recipient rights, the Governor’s office, cabinet members and their designees, the Department of Health and Human Services field office staff, Unemployment Insurance Agency employees, and other employees identified by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget.

The Governor has called on Intermediate School Districts (ISDs) to help mobilize and coordinate efforts to expand accessibility for child care services during this emergency. The ISDs will be partnering with the Early Childhood Investment Corporation and Michigan 2-1-1 to coordinate these efforts.

If you are a member of the essential workforce defined above and are in need of tuition-based child care, go to and your information will be routed to someone in your community who can help you find care.
