John M. Searles is the superintendent of Midland County Educational Service Agency and has more than 25 years of service to public education in Michigan. He has degrees from Aquinas College, Western Michigan University, and Michigan State University. John has been appointed by Governor Rick Snyder to the Mental Health Diversion Council and by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to the Special Education Advisory Council to the State Board of Education. Superintendent Searles currently serves as past-president of the Michigan Association of School Administrators and on the boards of Disability Network of Mid-Michigan, Midland Kids First, and the Arnold Center.

The office of the Superintendent provides leadership, support, service and assistance to local schools. This office is the liaison to the Michigan Department of Education and is a source of information about the Michigan School Code.
The office of the Superintendent administers MCESA Board of Education policies and operating procedures, and coordinates planned cooperative projects with local school districts. The Superintendent is the contact person for: Civil rights issues, property transfer requests, legal concerns, inter-agency collaboration, Title IX complaints, charter school information/oversight, and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
The office of the Superintendent maintains links with the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB), theMichigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA), and the American Association of Educational Service Agencies (AAESA) The Superintendent works with Midland County’s legislative representatives to provide legislative forums, legislative analysis, and updates for school administrators.
